地球環境科学研究院は、2017年度、日本学術振興会の標記プログラム「アジアモンスーンの長期的変動に関する共同研究」に代表機関として採択されました。当プログラムでは,ブラウン大学,ラトガース大学,オハイオ州立大学,キール大学,雲南大学,ビクトリア大学,早稲田大学,国立科学博物館と連携し,アジアモンスーンの長期的変動の復元を国際共同研究として推進するなかで,北海道大学・東京大学・金沢大学を世界の研究拠点とすることを目指します.世界の著名な研究者を招聘し,学生が研究の最先端に触れる機会を作ります.なお、2018年度からは「国際的な活躍ができる研究者の育成事業」として2019年度まで継続して実施し、若手研究者の育成にも重点を置く予定です。

12月 米国地球物理学連合秋季大会において西部北極海古海洋研究セッションを実施した(コンビナー: Leonid Polyak,山本正伸).関宰がビクトリア大学を訪問し,事業計画の細部を話し合った.

2月 国立科学博物館において日本側参加者が集合し,事業方針の検討と確認を行った.

3月 山本正伸と入野智久がオハイオ州立大学,ブラウン大学,ラトガース大学を訪問し,事業計画の細部を話し合った.多田隆治と鈴木克明が雲南大学を訪問し,事業計画の細部を話し合った.また合同調査地域の下見を行った.

New paleoclimate records from Asia and the western Pacific and Indian Oceans emerge recently to help us to understand the Cenozoic land-ocean linkage in those areas. The modern climate in those areas is strongly affected by the Asian monsoon and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation on seasonal and interannual timescale. Because the western Pacific and adjacent areas are warmest on the Earth’s surface, long-term records of climate in those areas are important to understand the energy budget of global climate system. We are keen to get a perspective on the role of the western Pacific and Indian atmospheric-ocean dynamics and land-ocean linkage in global climate. Investigation of the relationship between climate and the background conditions such as the uplift of the Tibetan plateau, changes in pCO2, the opening and closure of oceanic gateways during Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras will contribute to our understandings of the climate forcing and feedback mechanisms. The investigation of the relationship between tropical and polar climates on long timescales is also necessary to understand the climate driving and propagation processes. In this workshop, we exchange information on our current progress and discuss possible approaches to understand the role of the western Pacific and Indian atmosphere-ocean dynamics and land-ocean linkage in global climate change.

SUMMARY: Twenty-eight participants including ten speakers contributed to the workshop. In the morning, we discussed the issues of ice, CO2 and climate, which is central in paleoclimatology. Models indicate that ice volume responded to insolation with a large time-lag. Changes in periodicity and amplitudes of ice volume variability do not always need changes in CO2. CO2 seem to follow ice volume with some influence of insolation. Although the age models of both ice and marine cores have been established with great efforts by expert stratigraphers, there is possibly an disagreement of age models between ice and marine cores. In the afternoon, we discussed monsoon in different periods. Miocene monsoon variability shows interesting shifts of both periodicity and amplitude. Because it was the world without large northern hemisphere ice sheets, the behavior should give us an important hint to consider the linkage between ice and climate. The studies of millennial signals of the East Asian monsoon is highly useful to reconsider what Chinese speleothems indicate and to get a better perspective on monsoon variability. We also realize that the Japan Sea is an excellent recorder of both global and local climates. The onset of millennial signals was 1.31 Ma. The direct comparison between proxy records from the Japan Sea provides us to investigate how global change affects mid-latitude environments.
